Abstract

Laying a foundation for success in academic life is a necessary step that students need to take. Studying to pass examinations is a big challenge to many students. This paper likens educational activities to a trip that requires adequate preparation on the part of the traveler. The student makes conscious choices on a daily basis in an academic journey. The choices made, and attitudes displayed might eventually influence accomplishments and career status of the student. Problems normally arise in the academic journey; possible solutions are suggested. A review of effective approaches to studying was conducted, and some of the potentially dangerous activities of students are highlighted. A brief discussion of setting life goals as well as academic goals was made. A stress on the need to set academic goals consciously was also made. A positive attitude to university study is emphasized, and excessive involvement in student politics is discouraged. The strategies advanced in this paper should sensitise students to take control of their academic life in order to succeed in the university or other institutions of higher learning.
